15 -19 March 2010. ICES-INASP AuthorAID Workshop
on Research Writing Skills
A Workshop titled “AuthorAid Research Writing
Skills” was held by INASP (International Network for
Availability of Scientific Publications), in
collaboration with ICES from 15-19 March 2010 at Hotel
Tourmaline, Kandy, Sri Lanka. In August 2009, ICES
(Kandy office) submitted a proposal for a “Two-day
Workshop on Effective Proposal Writing” under PERii Mini
Activities for 2010 to INASP. This activity was approved
by INASP and included as a part of the “AuthorAid
Workshop on Research Writing Skills” which INASP held in collaboration with ICES from 15-19 March 2010 at
Hotel Tourmaline, Kandy, Sri Lanka.
Objectives of the workshop:
• To improve the ability of
authors to communicate their research so that it is
acceptable to peer-reviewed journals
• To enhance the
proposal writing skills of the NGO personnel and early
career researchers.

Future Security & Implications of the
PTA/ERs
in Post-War Sri Lanka
On 09th March 2010, The International Center for Ethnic
Studies held a roundtable discussion on the
Future Security & Implications of the PTA/ERs in
Post-War Sri Lanka. The roundtable was led by
Dr. Rohan Gunaratna
(Head, The
International Centre for Political Violence and
Terrorism Research, S. Rajaratnam School of
International Studies, Singapore),
Shanaka Jayasekara,
(Associate
Lecturer, Centre for Policing, Intelligence and Counter
Terrorism (PICT), Macquarie University, Sydney,
Australia) and
Dr. Deepika Udagama
(former
Head of Department, Faculty of Law, University of
Colombo). The discussion was well attended by all
sectors in society, including individuals from
government and non-governmental institutions as well as
the diplomatic community.

2009 highlights

4 August 2009, Group Discussion
involving four US scholars, Mr Dov Wilker (American
Jewish Committee), Ms Meg Heubeck (Center for Politics,
University of Virginia), Carmiel Arbit, Daman Irby - who
visited Sri Lanka on a Professional Exchange Program of
the American Embassy - and a selected group of Sri
Lankans that included clergy, academics, undergraduates,
NGO officials and other professionals.

Conference: ‘The Sri Lanka Conference on Peace and
Development’, Organized jointly with the University
of Peradeniya, the School of Global Studies, University
of Gothenburg and the Department of Peace and Conflict
Research, Uppsala University with financial support from
Swedish South Asian Studies Network (SASNET).

Program for the Pradeshiya Sabha Members of the Kandy
District”

15–19 March 2010, “INASP-ICES Workshop
on Research Writing Skills”, at Hotel Tormaline,
Kandy. The workshop was conducted by Prof Barbara Gastel,
MD, MPH, Texas A&M University and Mr Bernard Appiah,
Author AID Graduate Assistant, Texas A&M University with
Sri Lankan co-facilitators, Prof Tudor Silva and Dr S
Mahakalanda. The workshop was attended by 41
participants.
