About the Event
Ratnams documentary received red carpet honors at Cannes Film Festival in 2017. This gave the opportunity for the movie to travel many other international film festivals around the globe. It was later screened in the south of Sri Lanka a few times, but never had the opportunity to be screened in Jaffna as it was removed from the Jaffna International Cinema Festival (JICF) held in October 2018.
The 40-year-old director, who had to flee from Colombo to escape the Black July of 1983 with his family, when he was 5 years of age, highlights through this movie the cruelties and unjustifiable actions committed by the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) to their own community, the Tamils, who they professed to be defending.
Although the LTTE is infamous for suicide bombings, recruiting child soldiers and other atrocities many still hail it as a heroic organization that protected Tamils against alleged anti-Tamil actions of successive Sri Lankan governments and armed forces throughout the history. Therefore, Ratnam believes the documentary would help initiate a wide discussion on the LTTE within the Tamil community itself.
The screening of the documentary will be followed by a
discussion with the director.
