About the Event

'Her Story' is a 59-minute documentary by filmmaker Someetharan that explores the worship of the goddess Kannagi/Pattini as a living cultural and spiritual bridge between Sinhala and Tamil communities in Sri Lanka. The film focuses on two central rituals, the 'Kannagi Koothu' in Mullaitivu in the North and the 'Gammaduwa' ceremony in the South, revealing how devotion to the goddess transcends linguistic, regional, and religious boundaries.

Through extensive fieldwork, interviews, and documentation of rituals, 'Her Story' traces the shared legends, symbols, and performances that connect communities otherwise divided by history and geography. By capturing how the worship of Kannagi/Pattini continues to adapt and endure across generations, the film highlights the deep cultural confluence embedded in Sri Lanka’s devotional traditions - reminding viewers that shared belief can serve as a foundation for empathy and coexistence.
