About the Event
Join us for an evening as we delve into the captivating world of sound and culture with Imaad Majeed's lecture performance titled "What is the Sound of Culture Washing Away?"
Date: 15th September
Time: 7:00 PM
Venue: ICES Auditorium
About the Event:
Imaad Majeed's project "KANNOORU" raises the fundamental question of what happens when a culture starts to fade away. Through a collection of Sufi devotional songs and folk melodies from the Muslim community of Sri Lanka, gathered over years of research, the artist invites us to embark on a close-listening experience. Immerse yourself in the intricacies of their sampling process, and gain insights into the island's Muslim and Sufi communities, fostering a deeper understanding of their heritage.
About the Speaker:
Imaad Majeed, a dynamic multidisciplinary artist based in Colombo, Sri Lanka, is known for their role as Director and Curator of the trilingual performance platform "KACHA KACHA." As part of the artist collective "The Packet" and VJ/DJ of "Packet Radio" (SUPR FM), they have contributed significantly to the artistic landscape. Imaad's passion for sharing Sri Lankan musicians' stories with the world is evident through their international music blog contributions. Currently, they are engaged in "KANNOORU," a project supported by the Experimenter's Generator Co-operative Art Production Fund, exploring the realms of Sufi/Muslim identity, memory, and mysticism through sample-based music.
Don't miss this unique opportunity to explore the evocative soundscape of Sri Lanka's cultural heritage with Imaad Majeed. Mark your calendars for an evening of auditory and intellectual enrichment on the 15th of September at 7:00 PM. We look forward to your presence!
