ICES and GIZ – FLICT are pleased to invite you to ‘Sangeetham’on the29th of July at 3.30 p.m.at the ICES auditorium and patio. ‘Sangeetham’ will bring together artists, academics and activists to look at how music has been used as a toolof social transformation and debate in Sri Lanka. The festival will commence withtwo trilingual panel discussions (simultaneous interpretation will be available) and will be followed by performances by artists from different parts of the country.
The festivalwill look at howmusic questions the status quo and challenges conventional understandings ofgender, caste, ethnicity, land, globalization, andinstitutional oppression. It will look athow cultures of musical movements for social changehave emerged and evolved, and their impact on artistes and society at large. It will also considerthe role of music asrepositories of memories associated with personal experiences, collectivesocial struggles, particular social movements and politico-historical events.
The festival seeks to create a space for artistes and academics from the Northern, Eastern, Central, Southern and Western provinces of Sri Lanka,fromdiverse musical background and traditions, to discuss, perform and share insights.
