'whispers beneath the tree' traces the journey of the bodhi tree from bodh gaya in india to anuradhapura in sri lanka. it recounts how gautama buddha attained enlightenment beneath the peepal tree and how sanghamitta theri brought a branch of that tree to the mahamevuna gardens, where it continues to be venerated. the film highlights how the bodhi is revered by both buddhists and hindus, and how companion bodhi trees have spread across the island. through ritual scenes and reflection, it explores the practices and traditions that have grown around the tree, paying particular attention to the gendered dimensions of devotion, as the bodhi endures as a sacred symbol.
